Overview:
The objective of today’s session was to understand where the students are with respect to their final drafts and also how do we bring that forth during the final presentation. The presentation should be created keeping in mind that it is all within the framework of the text that they have developed during the course of the lab.
Exercises/Activity:
Two key questions were asked and answered regarding the plays of the participants-
1.What levels of conflict are depicted in the play? (Social, inner, external, etc)
2. How is that conflict reflected in terms of action in the play?
The students were pushed to identify their conflicts with respect to clear actions in the play and the impact it has on the overall story.
The second exercise was about story shapes. The participants were asked to identify which story-shape their play is taking. The story shapes are as follows:
- Linear, chronological, unity of time, space and action.
- Chinese Box story- one large story containing stories within stories. Eg- Arabian nights, Kathasaritasagara.
- Sketch/Vignettes- Connected by theme, location, etc.
- Grand story- (Epic) interrupted by other stories
- Relay race- A sequence of stories connected by characters
- Parallel stories- Stories connected by theme but the difference in narrative, time and place.
- Flashback- One story interrupted by time sequence (past)
- Circular story- Ending up where it began.
